Are
You Interested In Being
A Board Member?
Have
you ever wondered how to become a non-profit board member? Have you wondered
what the time commitment is to serve on a board? The answers are that
it is different for each non-profit organization. Some non-profit groups
require financial donations to be a board member and some do not. Some
non-profit boards meet once per month and some meet once per quarter.
It just depends on the type of organization.
The Ballard Community Service Board meets once per month at 4:30 p.m.
on the second Tuesday of the month. Ballard Board members are elected
to a three year term. Terms run from January to December, with nominations
of new board members occurring in November. Additional requirements are
that Board members make a commitment to help with financial fundraising
events and serve on a committee of their choosing.
How To Be A Ballard Board
Member
1. Visit the Ballard
Community Service operational sites.
Ballard Center - 708 Elm St.
Penn House - 1035 Pennsylvania
Brookcreek Learning Center - 200 Mount Hope Court
Brookcreek Lawrence High School
2. Volunteer to serve on a committee - we have several. For
example:
Education Committee - Works with the early education
program
Special Event Committee - This committee is one of
our most active and is responsible for planning and conducting our annual
fundraising events. This is the best way to learn about our
organization.
3. Understand what it means to serve as a Board member:
a) Fiscal responsibility - All board members must be
responsible for understanding and participating in financial discussions
of the organization. This is perhaps one of the most important aspects
of serving on a board. The fiscal health of the organization depends
on actively understanding the financial security of the organization.
b) Understand that the Board's role is governance and planning,
not the management of the organization. It is up to the Board
to hire a good CEO who will manage daily operations. Helping to map
the future of the organization and helping to reach the long term goals
are key roles of a Board member.
c) Understand the time commitment. A Ballard Board
member spends at least one and one-half hours per month at the board
meetings. However, they are also active in participating in committee
meetings, volunteering to help at the two sites and sharing their expertise
in different areas.
What Are The Benefits Of Serving As A Board Member?
The joy of knowing that you make a very big difference in the lives
of children and families. Your contribution to any non-profit organization
is greatly appreciated. Without strong, knowledgeable and involved Board
members, non-profit organizations can not conduct their important work
in your community. Thank you for being interested and please call the
Ballard Community Services main office if you would be interested in
